Founded in 2003, Galena Asset Management is led by an experienced group of Fund managers. Together the managers bring a wealth of experience in metals and energy trading.

Jeremy Weir

Chief Executive Officer

Jeremy Weir

Jeremy has twenty four years' experience in the metals and metal derivative markets. He joined the Trafigura Group in January 2001 as head of metal derivatives trading, structured products and risk management. Jeremy is currently the CEO for Galena Asset Management, Portfolio Manager for the Galena Macro Fund and board member of the Trafigura Group. 

Before that he spent almost nine years with N M Rothschild. In Australia, he set up the group's non-ferrous metals derivatives business and developed Rothschild's structured products. In London, promoted to the main board, his responsibilities encompassed the company's worldwide metal trading activities and structured finance business. He was also a member of the group's treasury and banking executive management team.

Jeremy has also worked at Pasminco Metals and North. He holds a Bachelor of Sciences degree and is a Geology major from the University of Melbourne

Gerard Lynch

Gerard Lynch

Gerard joined Galena Asset Management in December 2006 with responsibility for finance, tax, legal, operational and compliance matters.  Gerard started his career in audit at Ernst & Young moving, once qualified, to its corporate recovery department where he undertook independent business reviews and other investigations, as well as formal debt restructurings.  Prior to joining Galena, he was with the FSA, principally managing supervision teams dealing with wholesale market brokers and asset managers, but latterly was responsible for the team supporting supervisors in the wholesale firms division with the implementation of the Capital Requirements Directive based financial rules.

Gerard is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accountancy from the University of Liverpool.

Duncan Letchford

Chief Investment Officer / Galena Metals Fund - Portfolio Manager

Duncan Letchford

Duncan has twenty two years experience in the base and precious metals markets. He joined Galena in October 2005 as Portfolio Manager of the Galena Metals Fund. He was previously employed at HSBC Bank London where he was the senior base metals futures trader responsible for hedging the group's global metal risk with particular emphasis on corporate, producer and hedge fund trading activities.

Originally a precious metals trader Duncan started his career at N.M.Rothschild in 1990 as a Platinum group metals dealer focusing on forward and arbitrage trading opportunities. His career has also encompassed spells at Deutsche Bank London as a primary market maker in precious metals and AIG International Limited London where he was responsible for precious metals trading concentrating on gold, silver and other related products.

Nicholas Hanley

Nicholas Hanley

Nicholas joined Galena in April 2007, after working for the derivatives desk of Trafigura (Galena's parent company) for a year. Nicholas holds a 1st Class Masters degree in Engineering from Oxford University.

Matt Adams

Matt Adams

After an internship in early 2007, Matt joined Galena in September 2007. As well as working on the technical models used by the fund, he is developing his knowledge of commodity markets by looking at arbitrage and volatility trading opportunities. Matt is well placed to use his analytical skills gained from his 1st Class Masters degree from Oxford University in Mathematics.

Nick Packman

Galena Metals Fund - Trader

Nick Packman

Nick worked for Merrill Lynch and Citigroup before joining Galena in October 2007 in a back and middle office role which provided a good background in the metals markets. He moved to the front office in September 2009 as a junior trader where he continues to expand his market knowledge and trading experience.

Nick graduated from Cardiff University with a Masters degree in economics with a dissertation on gold pricing.

Cedric Chone

Cedric Chone
Cedric joined Galena Asset Management in October 2005. He began his career in 1996 at a leading steel company (Arcelor, formerly Usinor) where he worked for four years, responsible for hedging and trading base metals and energy books. Cedric then worked for Banque d'Orsay as a proprietary trader before joining BAREP AM (Societe General Group) in 2001 to launch the BAREP Commodity Arbitrage Fund, a relative value fund which trades a diversified portfolio of industrial commodities on a discretionary portfolio.

Cedric graduated from Ecole des Mines de Nancy in France as a mining civil engineer.

Emil Swanepoel

Emil Swanepoel

Emil joined Galena Asset Management in April 2007 and has 22 years experience in the financial and metals sector.

Emil started his career  working for Macquarie and Standard Bank on their Gold Hedging Joint Venture. He then joined Lehman Brothers in New York where he developed their global derivative risk and trading environment.

He left Lehman brothers for the opportunity to start up a boutique fixed income and financial services business, Decillion. During this time he was involved in launching Big Rock, long short equity fund and more recently started and managed a Convertible Arbitrage Fund (DECAF).

Emil studied Electronic Engineering at the University of Pretoria.

Pascal Quitt

Pascal Quitt

Pascal joined Galena Asset Management in December 2006. After having started his career as a Consultant and Auditor at Moore Stephens in 1999 he joined  Synchrony Asset Management as a quantitative research associate and  later became a fund manager in the same company. He then worked as a Buy Side Analyst for Société Générale (Switzerland) in charge of the Energy and related Materials sector.

Pascal graduated from the Geneva Institute of International Studies with a Masters in International Economics & Finance and then followed an M.Sc. Course in Economics & Finance at the University of Geneva.

Duncan Hay

Duncan Hay

Duncan joined Galena Asset Management in November 2007. He has degrees in Geology and Mining Finance and, after gaining practical experience in gold exploration and civil engineering, began working as a sell-side research analyst for approximately six years.

Prior to joining Galena, Duncan was based in Sydney with Merrill Lynch, where he was working in a top-rated mining research team covering BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Alumina Ltd.

Ross McCormick

Ross joined Galena Asset Management in March 2012 with 8 years experience in equity and commodity markets.

Prior to joining Galena, Ross was a portfolio manager at James Caird Asset Management and also held positions as a resource analyst at Moore Capital and in equity research at JPMorgan.

Ross graduated from Cambridge Univesity with a degree in Natural Sciences.

Jaakko Ahmala

Jaakko Ahmala

Jaakko Ahmala has twenty three years experience in oil derivatives and physical markets. He joined the Trafigura group in 2008 and has been the head of the Oil Derivatives Group since 2010. In January 2013 he moved to Galena as Senior Portfolio Manager on the Galena Energy Fund.

Before joining Trafigura Jaakko spent nine years with Morgan Stanley in commodities heading the North Sea crude oil trading. He started his career in 1989 with Neste Oil in London and Helsinki ultimately taking responsibility for the supply management of the Porvoo and Naantali refineries. While at Neste Jaakko also got involved in risk management operations.

He holds a M.Sc (Economics) from the Helsinki School of Economics.

Mark Heath

Mark Heath

Mark Heath has over 10 years experience in commodity markets, having traded oil and its product derivatives, natural gas and UK power. He joined Trafigura in 2008 as a senior trader on the oil derivatives desk, where he has been responsible for managing Trafigura’s refinery margin exposure through OTCmarkets. He is also responsible for the origination of many long term structures that the company looks at in the downstream sector.

Prior to joining Trafigura Mark traded physical jet fuel at Hetco, and started his career trading natural gas as Enron in the UK. He holds a Batchelor of Science degree from Kings College London.

Philippe Huber

Philippe Huber

Philippe joined Galena Energy Fund at its inception in 2009. He was a Partner at Cinetics, a quantitative hedge fund manager based in Geneva. Prior to that, he started his career at UBP in 2004 as a quant analyst.

Philippe was winner of the Universal 2004 award for the best PhD thesis and has a PhD in Econometrics and Statistics, University of Geneva (2004) as well as a Master in Physics from EPFL Lausanne (1998).

Wissem Bourbia

Wissem Bourbia

Wissem Bourbia has more than 15 years of experience in credit, commodity and structured finance and has accumulated an expertise over a variety of credit assets.

Prior to joining Galena Asset Management Ltd in September 2009, Wissem held various positions at Societe Generale and Natixis working for their Commodity and Trade Finance departments.  At Natixis, he spearheaded their commodity & trade finance fund project from 2007 to 2009,

Before that, he spent 13 years at SG working as senior structurer in the securitization department where he structured the first oil trade finance securitization transaction in 2000, then as head of the European CDO Structuring Group and from 2003 to 2007 as Head of Alternative Finance within the commodity & trade finance department where he set up different structures related to commodity & trade finance.  This included the setting up of the Global Commodities Finance Fund and Aldea Capital Management Limited.  At SG, he also managed a $1bn credit portfolio.

Wissem holds an engineering degree from Ecole Centrale de Paris, a BS in Mathematics and an MBA from San Diego St. University.

Alexandre Vieira

Alexandre Vieira

Alexandre Vieira has spent his entire professional career in trade finance and has over 10 years’ experience in Structured Commodities Finance markets. He joined Galena Asset Management in 2010 as Portfolio Manager of the Commodity Trade Finance Fund.

Prior to joining Galena, he was Senior Relationship Manager in the Trade and Commodity Finance Oil desk of ING Geneva having responsibility for a portfolio of $1.5bn of credit lines in favour of global trading companies for the financing of physical oil transactions (including traditional transactional finance, borrowing base facilities, pre-payments and non-recourse receivables financing).

Alexandre had previously spent 8 years at Natixis, of which 4 years were in Sao Paulo where he was responsible for the metals structured finance portfolio.  Back in Paris, he became coordinator for the Latin American soft commodities business of the bank.  During his years at Natixis, Alexandre also worked as Senior Relationship Manager for the Trade and Commodity Finance Metals desk and as risk analyst in the Commodities Finance Risk Management team.

He graduated from EDHEC Business School (Lille, France) with a specialization in finance.

Meron Marcyniuk

Meron Marcyniuk

Meron Marcyniuk has over 14 years of commodity and trade finance experience gained during his banking career and 10 years experience of working in a commodity trading company and is the Credit Risk Officer of the Commodity Trade Finance Fund.

He started his career at National Westminster Bank (9 years), joining Banque Indosuez (9 years) and then moving to ING Barings (5 years) before joining Trafigura 10 years ago to set up its credit team.

Whilst with the Trafigura Group, Meron was the global head of credit risk management with the function expanding to 13 credit professionals located in four key regional offices across the globe.

After a very successful period as the global head of credit risk management for the Trafigura Group, Meron transferred to become the Credit Risk Officer of the new Fund.

Meron graduated from the University of Leeds in 1977 with an honours degree in physics.

Christoph Gugelmann

Christoph Gugelmann

Christoph Gugelmann joined Galena in July 2012 with 17 years experience in Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities.

Prior to joining Galena, Christoph was Head of European Market Solutions Group at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Before that, he was Head of FICC Germany/Austria at Goldman Sachs and fulfilled a Financial Institutions Advisory Role at Morgan Stanley.

Christoph holds a degree in Finance from University of St. Gall.

Philip Jan Kok

Philip Jan Kok

Philip Jan Kok joined Galena Asset Management in July 2012 and has 16 years experience in Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities.

Prior to joining Galena, he was Country Head (Netherlands) at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Before that, Philip was the Head of Fixed Income Netherlands at Credit Suisse and held positions in Structured Solutions and Capital Markets and Corporate Finance at Merrill Lynch.

Philip holds a Masters degree in Financial Economics from  Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. 

 

Stefano Sabbadini

Stefano Sabbadini

Stefano Sabbadini joined Galena Asset Management in July 2012 and has 11 years experience in Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities.

Prior to joining Galena, Stefano was the Head of EMEA Credit and Funding Structuring at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Before this he was a Credit Derivatives Trader at Goldman Sachs.

Stefano holds a Degree in Economics from Bocconi University in Milan.

Marek Lacko

Marek Lacko

Marek Lacko joined Galena in 2011. Prior to joining Galena, Marek was  at Morgan Stanley as the Metals Desk Head of Options on Base Metals and the Head of Energy Options in Singapore before that. He benefits from eleven years of experience in the commodity markets.

Marek has a degree in Finance from the HEC School of Management in Paris.

Jesus Fernandez

Jesus Fernandez

Jesus Fernandez joined the Trafigura Group in June 2004 and established its mining investment arm in 2005.  Jesus has 11 years of experience in mining investments and financing.  He is the head of Trafigura’s mining investment team and chief financial officer of Trafigura’s mining division.  Jesus is a board member of Trafigura’s mining division, Iberian Minerals, Anvil Mining Limited, Tiger Resources and Cadillac Ventures.  Prior to joining the Trafigura Group, he worked in the project finance team at International Power plc in London. 

Jesus has an MA in finance and investment from the University of Exeter and a Licenciatura in economics from the Universidad de Cantabria, Spain.

James Burke

James Burke

James Burke joined the Trafigura Group in March 2009 and has 13 years of experience in the mining industry with 11 years of experience in mining corporate finance and is the senior investment professional.  Prior to joining the Trafigura Group, he worked in the metals and mining corporate finance division at Standard Bank in both London and Sydney and was also a mineral commodities analyst at AME Mineral Economics in Sydney.  James is a board member of Cadillac Ventures. 

He has an Msc in mineral project appraisal and a Bsc in geology from the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College London.

Fabien Brenneval

Fabien Brenneval

Fabien Brenneval joined the Trafigura Group in October 2011 and has four years of experience in mining corporate finance.  Prior to joining the Trafigura Group, he worked in the metals and mining corporate finance advisory team at J.P. Morgan, where he worked on multiple M&A and capital raising mandates across base metals and bulks.  Fabien also previously worked at the World Bank, monitoring the portfolio of projects financed by the institution in Mauritania. 

He has an MBA and a master of engineering from the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in France.

Dmitry Miller

Dmitry Miller

Dmitry Miller joined the Trafigura Group in February 2009 and has six years of experience in investment and financial advisory in metals and mining.  Prior to joining the Trafigura Group, Dmitry worked on the metals and mining team in the investment banking division of Goldman Sachs for three years, advising on M&A and IPOs.  He graduated from the London School of Economics with a management degree.
